Background:  Arthmender is a herbal supplement derived from India's Ayurvedic Medicine (also called Ayurveda).  Ayurvedic Medicine is recognized as a Complementary and Alternative Medicine by the National Institutes of Health in the United States.  It is one of the oldest medical systems (estimated to have originated 5,000 years ago).  Nearly 80% of the population in India (900 million people) relies on Ayurveda exclusively or in conjunction with Western medicine.  That's more than the populations of North America and South America combined!

Common Results Expected:  Arthmender's proprietary formulation contains 269 natural phytonutrients that exert 514 synergistic activities on your body.  Many of these phytonutrients are widely recognized for their contribution to Joint and Overall Health: ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, beta-sitosterol, biotin, boron, boswellic acid, calcium, choline, chromium, cobalt, copper, curcumin, ferulic acid, fiber, gingerenone, gingerol, glycine, guggulsterones, iron, linoleic acid, lysine, magnesium, manganese, niacin, nickel, oleic acid, potassium, quercetin, riboflavin, rutin, selenium, thiamin, trytophan, and zinc.  For example,
  • Ascorbic Acid - Reduces risk of joint problems by helping to form, repair, and maintain cartilage collagen. McAlindon TE, "Do Antioxidant Micronutrients Protect Against the Development and Progression of Knee Osteoarthritis?", Arthritis Rheum 1996, 39:648-56.

  • Beta-Carotene - May reduce the risk of the progression of joint problems.  McAlindon TE, "Do Antioxidant Micronutrients Protect Against the Development and Progression of Knee Osteoarthritis?", Arthritis Rheum 1996, 39:648-56.

  • Boswellic Acid - Linked to improved joint health. Sengupta K, Alluri KV, Satish AR, "A Double Blind, Randomized, Placebo Controlled Study of the Efficacy and Safety of 5-Loxin(R) for Treatment of Osteoarthritis of the Knee", Arthritis Res Ther. Jul 30 2008, 10(4):R85.

  • Copper - Needed for effective cross-linking of collagen and elastin.  National Acadamies Press, Dietary Reference Intakes for Vitamin A, Vitamin K, Arsenic, Boron, Chromium, Copper, Iodine, Iron, Manganese, Molybdenum, Nickel, Silicon, Vanadium, and Zinc (2000), Food and Nutrition Board (FNB), Institute of Medicine (IOM).

  • Curcumin - May improve joint health.  Kuptniratsaikul V, Thanakhumtorn S, Chinswangwatanakul P, "Efficacy and Safety of Curcuma Domestica Extracts in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis", J Altern Complement Med., 2009 Aug, 15(8):891-7.

  • Ginger Extracts - Reduce osteoarthritis pain. Altman RD, Marcussen KC, "Effects of Ginger Extract on Knee Pain in Patients with Osteoarthritis", Arthritis Rheum 2001, 44:2531-38;  Bliddal H, Rosetzsky A, Schlichting P, "A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Cross-Over Study of Ginger Extracts and Ibuprofen in Osteoarthritis", Osteoarthritis Cartilage 2000, 8:9-12;  Marcus DM, Suarez-Almazor ME, "Is There a Role for Ginger in the Treatment of Osteoarthritis?", Arthritis Rheum 2001, 44:2461-2; Wigler I, Grotto I, Caspi D, Yaron M, "The Effects of Zintona EC (a Ginger Extract) on Symptomatic Gonarthritis", Osteoarthritis Cartilage 2003, 11:783-9;  Chrubasik JE, Roufogalis BD, Chrubasik S, "Evidence of Effectiveness of Herbal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs in the Treatment of Painful Osteoarthritis and Chronic Low Back Pain", Phytother Res. Jul 2007, 21(7):675-683.

  • Guggulsterones - Recent study involving 30 patients showed significant improvement ( P < 0.0001) in osteoarthritis symptoms after taking 500 mg Commiphora mukul 3 times per day with food for 1 month.  Singh BB, Mishra LC, Vinjamury SP, Aquilina N, Singh VJ, Shepard N, "The effectiveness of Commiphora Mukul for Osteoarthritis of the Knee: An Outcomes Study", Altern Ther Health Med, 2003, 9:74-79.

  • Manganese - Deficiency appears to be a factor in bone loss and degenerative joint conditions.  Das A Jr, Hammad TA., "Efficacy of a Combination of FCHG49 Glucosamine Hydrochloride, TRH122 Low Molecular Weight Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate and Manganese Ascorbate in the Management of Knee Osteoarthritis", Osteoarthritis Cartilage. 2000 Sep, 8(5):343-50.

  • Selenium - Studies show a relationship between low selenium and decreased joint health.  Jordan JM, Fang F, Arab L, "Low Selenium Levels are Associated with Increased Risk for Osteoarthritis of the Knee", American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting, San Diego November 12-17, 2005. Abstract 1189.

  • Zinc - Studies have confirmed that zinc promotes healthy cartilage collagen.  Rosenberg K, "Cartilage Oligomeric Matrix Protein Shows High Affinity Zinc-Dependent Interaction with Triple Helical Collagen", J Biol Chem., 1998 Aug 7, 273(32):20397-403.  Leppanen VM, "Crystal Structure of the N-Terminal NC4 Domain of Collagen IX, a Zinc Binding Member of the Laminin-Neurexin-Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (LNS) Domain Family", J Biol Chem. 2007 Aug 10, 282(32):23219-30.
